As Smith notes, the court could have ordered six months of therapy to see what happened, but it refused to do even that. The case has drawn the attention of advocacy groups for the disabled, but their attempted federal suit on grounds of discrimination, also joined by Gov. Bush, was denied in U.S. District Court.

As Smith points out, it’s appropriate to worry about the larger issue. But it’s also appropriate to remember that a husband with what certainly seems to be a clear conflict of interest has found allies in the courts to kill his wife.
